A Rustic and Rich Home in Sanjo Concept and Location Located in a tranquil, newly developed residential area one block from the bustling center of Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, this project proposes a serene lifestyle removed from urban clamor. Embracing simplicity and warmth, it seeks to harness the natural expressions of materials to create a home that resonates with its surroundings while offering residents a quiet, comfortable daily life. Spatial Composition and Materials Upon entering the space, the warmth and delicate texture of wood envelop the senses. The interior employs solid wood and mahogany plywood, imparting a rustic yet profound quality to the entire space. These materials, aging gracefully over time, become an integral part of the residents’ lives. The main windows feature Yoshimura shoji, which softly diffuse light, creating gentle shadows within the interior. Designed by architect Junzo Yoshimura, these shoji reimagine traditional Japanese screens with a modern sensibility, characterized by a delicate balance of slender wooden frames and washi paper. Their minimalist structure infuses the space with a sense of refined tension. The ceiling showcases exposed structural beams, meticulously planned to be evenly spaced. The rhythmic arrangement of the beams lends order and strength to the space, visually highlighting the framework of the wooden construction. These exposed beams enhance openness while accentuating the inherent beauty of the materials. Staircase and Multifunctional Space The staircase, constructed with plywood stringers and treads, embodies a simple yet airy design. The landing is generously proportioned, transcending its role as a mere transitional space to become a versatile area. Designed as a cozy retreat where residents can read, lounge, or spend quality time together, this intermediary zone between floors exudes warmth and comfort. The interplay of light and material around the staircase elevates it as the heart of the home. Architectural Intent This residence seeks to infuse daily life with tranquility and richness through unpretentious materials and meticulous detailing. In harmony with Sanjo’s peaceful environment, the wood’s natural textures and the play of light add depth to everyday moments. The delicate glow of Yoshimura shoji, the warmth of plywood, the robust rhythm of exposed beams, and the multifunctional staircase landing together create a unique sanctuary for its inhabitants.
