ENTREE: A Community Space by a Sanjo Craftsman Concept and Functions In Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture, a local construction company transformed part of its office into a community space to foster deeper connections with residents. Named ENTREE, the space serves as a multifunctional hub, hosting DIY workshops led by the company’s carpenters, a permanent café, and a retail area for DIY-related products. Rooted in the spirit of traditional craftsmanship, it aims to create a space that resonates with contemporary lifestyles while remaining open to the community. Façade Design To convert the existing office into a vibrant store, the façade was reimagined to give the area a fresh identity. Using readily available aluminum profiles, the design incorporates decorative elements reminiscent of traditional kigumi (wooden lattice) joinery. This approach creates a light, translucent, double-skin-like layered façade, blending modernity with tradition. The sharp lines of the aluminum interplay with light and shadow, harmonizing with the streetscape while asserting a distinctive presence. Interior and Implementation Challenges Due to operational constraints, the interior did not fully realize the initial CG proposals. However, it successfully reflects the company’s craftsmanship and local character. The space is designed for flexibility, accommodating DIY workshops, café operations, and retail needs. Lessons learned from this project will inform future endeavors, driving further refinement. Architectural Intent ENTREE is an endeavor to share the region’s craftsmanship culture and nurture community interaction. The kigumi-inspired façade serves as a bridge between tradition and innovation, establishing a new local landmark. Realized within constrained conditions, this space stands as an open hub in Sanjo, connecting craftsmanship with everyday life.
